.Josh thought about asking her to keep an eye on his one-of-a-kindraincoat but instead said, Thanks, and then he pushed the button forline three. Hi, Thad. What s up? Want to meet for lunch?Josh tossed the unread memos into the recycling bin under hisdesk. I d love to! Where do you want to go? I m in the mood for a greasy burger.Have you been to Mr.Henry s? Nope, but I ve never met a burger I didn t like.Thad s laugh was music to his ears. Well, then, you ll love Mr.Henry s.It s over on Pennsylvania Avenue near Capitol Hill.Meet meout front at eleven thirty and we ll take a cab. Sounds great.I ll look forward to it. 118 Michael RupuredThad s call lifted Josh s spirits. The rest of the morning flew by.Josh opened all his mail, returned several calls, and after a conferencecall about a new website for the firm with the communication directorsfrom all the Walker, Cochran and Lowe offices, he managed to knockout a couple of job orders. At 11:25, he left his office, grabbed theyellow rain slicker from the peg, and headed down the stairs to meetThad.Thad was waiting for him at the front door.Upon seeing Josh, hesaid, Where are the boots?Puzzled, Josh looked down at his still damp shoes. What boots? The boots that match that lovely yellow jacket. Thad grinned. Are you embarrassed to be seen with me? Josh spun around likea model on a New York City runway during fashion week. Ourreceptionist laughed when she saw me this morning. Embarrassed? Thad shook his head. Heck no.London Fogtrench coats are the uniform in this town.Nice to see someone elsebreak from the pack.Josh admired Thad s jacket: an expensive-looking, tight-fittinglight-blue number from Woolrich. I hardly think you re in the sameleague as me. You re right. Thad performed an award-winning dramatic sigh. I guess I can handle you getting all the attention.Since you re somuch easier to see, why don t you hail us a cab?Josh stepped out of the building into the pouring rain and raisedhis arm.A cab swerved across two lanes of traffic, splashing water onhis shoes as it skidded to a stop at the curb in front of them.Joshopened the door and motioned for Thad to slide across. Where to? the driver asked over the Middle Eastern musicblaring from his tape player.Thad said, Mr.Henry s, please, on Pennsylvania Avenue. Got it. The turbaned driver darted back out into traffic, causingJosh s still open door to barely miss closing on his ankle as it slammedshut.Josh fastened his seat belt and held on as the driver wove throughtraffic. An anxious ten minutes later, they reached their destination. UNTIL THANKSGIVING 119Thad selected an empty table with a view of the deserted, rain-soaked patio.A waiter dropped off menus and glasses of water, promising to return in a jiffy to take their orders.Thad hung his jacket on the back of a nearby empty chair. Mr.Henry s is a local institution. Before she was famous, Roberta Flackplayed piano and sang here. The food is pretty good for what it is.Josh hung his rain slicker on the other empty chair at the table andthen took a seat. I love Roberta Flack almost as much as a goodburger. Same here. And the onion rings are really good too.Josh looked over the menu. I should order a veggie burger, ormaybe just a salad. Yeah, me too, Thad agreed. When the waiter returned, they both ordered bacon cheeseburgers, onion rings, and large Cokes. He jotted down their order, retrieved themenus, and before heading back to the kitchen, said the burgers wouldbe ready in a jiffy.Josh looked at Thad. What the hell is a jiffy ?Thad laughed. Damned if I know.Should we time him?Josh removed his watch and set it on the table. Sure, why not? You got big plans for the weekend? Thad asked. I ve got plans for tonight with Ed, but nothing for the weekend.I ve been in DC for weeks now and still haven t done any sightseeing.Iwas hoping you d be interested in showing me around a bit tomorrowor Sunday. I d love to give you a tour.Philip and I are going to see myparents Sunday, but tomorrow works.Where do you want to go?Josh shrugged. I have no idea. There s so much to do here.Whatwould you suggest for a newbie?Thad thought for a moment. Let s knock out the memorials andmonuments and see if maybe we have enough energy left to hit theSmithsonian when we re done.Want to meet me at the Metro station at,say, ten o clock? 120 Michael Rupured Can we make it eleven? Ed s taking me to the Eagle tonight andI m guessing we ll be late getting home. Was it just Josh simagination or had Thad winced? Sure.Wear comfy shoes. We ll be doing a lot of walking. If it sraining, we ll skip the memorials and hit the Smithsonian first.Josh decided he had imagined the wince. Sounds like a plan.A jiffy turned out to be a bit more than ten minutes.Barely visiblebeneath a mountain of onion rings, the half-pound burgers nearly filledthe plates the waiter plopped in front of them.Josh s eyes widened his eyes as he inhaled the aroma of friedgoodness. I m so glad I didn t get a salad. UNTIL THANKSGIVING 121" 28 "THE phone started ringing as Josh unlocked the door to his apartment. He had three more rings before the answering machine picked up, sothere was no need to rush.He heard the answering machine click afterthe second ring and, realizing someone must have left a message forhim earlier in the day, dove for the phone to answer before the callerhung up. It s Ed.We still on for tonight? Yep.I m looking forward to it. Want to grab dinner before we hit the Eagle?Still belching onion rings from lunch, Josh asked, What did youhave in mind? I m hoping for more of what I had the other night. Steak? No.I m talking about what I had for dessert, back in yourapartment.Josh laughed. I should have known. You re such a pig. Oink, oink.It s not like you didn t know.Back to dinner.Do youlike Thai? Can t say I ve ever had it, but I m willing to give it a try. Joshlooked at his watch and saw it was nearly five thirty. What time? How about I pick you up out in front of your apartment buildingat eight? Perfect. Josh figured two and a half hours was plenty of time towork up an appetite.
